Farias started its activity in 1951, founded by three brothers residing in the parish of Praia do Norte and whose last name also became the name of the firm, still open today and which operated on the southern side of the island – Horta/Praia do Norte /Horta.
In 1969, the share of the partner Francisco Faria was purchased by Casa Bensaude, which in turn, years later, sold it to Varela & Ca.
There used to be another public transport company, Empresa Cedrense de Transportes, which explored the northern side of the island, on the Cedros/Horta/Cedros route, later bought by Farias in 1973, making it the only concessionaire in the island.
In 1997 Varela & Ca Lda bought the share of the partner Sérgio Faria and immediately set out to reorganize the company, including not only renewing its fleet but also the public image of the firm.
